Embrace Change: Stop Blaming the External World

Written on

Chapter 1: The Journey of Self-Discovery

For those participating in the Sun Salutation challenge, what have you experienced so far? It’s easy to imagine that you either see wonderful changes or found excuses to skip it. Maybe you encountered hurdles and instead of seeking simpler alternatives or using visualization and breathwork, you let guilt prevent you from continuing.

Understanding human psychology can be framed in terms of two drives: one that promotes life and one that leads to destruction. These elements are interdependent, working together to form a psyche that both nurtures and dismantles in a harmonious way. To transform into a new version of yourself, you must be willing to let go of your old ego. Stagnation occurs when this process is neglected. The drive for life can be harmful, while the destructive drive, representing exploration and growth, can be healing when balanced.

To create art, build strength, or enact societal changes, you need a blend of nurturing support and a certain degree of psychological challenge. Striking a balance between these forces yields a unique creative/destructive synergy. This perspective reveals how a mix of fear and aggression can debilitate, while love and care, if not balanced, may hinder progress. The common mantra "Stay Hungry" rings true; without adequate defenses or support, you must harmonize the adult and child within, the masculine and feminine, the creative and destructive forces in your psyche to avoid implosion, explosion, or becoming prey.

Recognizing the necessity of embracing both life and death daily allows you to take calculated risks, shedding your ego while fostering the rebirth of your inner self.

The minimum commitment for this transformation is just two minutes daily. Why is that? The Sun Salutation is a genuinely profound exercise. You could dedicate an hour each day to mastering it for a lifetime and still uncover new insights. Yet, it is accessible to anyone willing to adopt a flexible mindset—a vital skill in life.

Engaging with this practice connects your mind, body, and heart in a way that few modern individuals experience. You will undergo transformation unless you are already on this path.

Have you trapped emotional distress in your body, creating what the Hawaiian Huna refers to as a "black bag"? This can lead to various stress-related issues such as connective tissue deterioration, digestive problems, sleep disorders, weight gain, and sexual dysfunction. Processing these emotions may feel like shedding weight while releasing stored toxins, and if not approached carefully, it can lead to illness.

"Meditation is like running a filter for the aquarium of your soul." — Steven Barnes

Fortunately, the essence of meditation can be found in Chi Gung practices: synchronize your breath, sight, intention, and movement. Align your breathing with your motions and seek a state of flow, regardless of how stiff or uncoordinated you may feel today.

Keep in mind: your ego may interpret any rustiness you feel as something to be ashamed of, overwhelming you with guilt and blame. It will try to deter you from continuing because revealing your true self can be uncomfortable, challenging the comforting lies you might cling to.

If you cannot commit to even an hour a month of conscious movement, you risk disconnecting from the body-mind engagement that our ancestors naturally maintained, making it easy to lose your way. Furthermore, if this is the case, it’s time to stop attributing your life’s failures to external circumstances. The challenge lies within you—whether stemming from upbringing, societal expectations, toxic relationships, karma, or even genetics. If you struggle to dedicate just two minutes a day to introspection, the world outside is not to blame. It’s not the external factors if you cannot keep promises to yourself.

Instead, utilize this time and practice to connect your mind and body, and to ask yourself essential questions: "Who am I?" and "What is true?" This is your opportunity.

However, be truthful with yourself: you may not yet be prepared to confront your inner demons. Acknowledging this is a step towards authenticity.

Blaming the external world has served as an escape until now. This is your invitation to shift that perspective. Whatever challenges you face externally, please do not ally with them. That is the true path to relinquishing your dreams.

Namaste,

Steve
