Chapter 1: The Surprising Success of an Unconventional Topic

It's hard to believe I'm about to share this story, but here it goes.

My most popular piece on Medium revolves around an unexpected subject: penises. I often wish it had been one of my other articles that I believe hold significant value, but the reality is different. This particular article, which features a straightforward statistic about penises, has garnered the most attention.

When I began my journey on Medium, I was financially struggling and aimed to earn some quick cash. Initially, I wrote about books, investing, health, and my earnings on the platform. Unfortunately, those topics didn't perform well, likely due to the oversaturated market of similar articles. I then pivoted to writing about dating and sexual attraction, which surprisingly attracted a lot of views.

It became clear to me that readers were quite interested in relationships and sexual dynamics; in essence, sex sells.

This led me to explore the topic of penises. Given my previous experiences, I sensed a potential for success with this piece. Plus, the thought of it actually gaining traction was amusing. With little to lose, I went ahead and wrote the article.

As it stands, the article has yielded impressive statistics, showcasing its popularity.

What can we draw from this experience?

I believe my journey with this article imparts several key lessons for anyone looking to boost their earnings on Medium.

First, it's not necessary to write solely about penises. If you've published multiple articles across various subjects, your analytics can provide insightful data. You might identify trends indicating which topics resonate more with readers, suggesting that you should focus on those subjects to enhance your chances of going viral.

On the flip side, consider discontinuing content that hasn't performed well. In my case, articles discussing my Medium earnings yielded minimal returns.

It's important to go against the grain. Many topics on Medium are heavily saturated, such as earnings reports, writing tips, or methods to make money online, which diminishes the likelihood of success. Instead, I encourage exploring more unique subjects that, while appealing to a broad audience, have less competition.
