Chapter 1: Introduction to Behavior-Changing Books
In today’s world, a simple online search for book recommendations will yield countless lists. Whenever I encounter such lists, I take the time to assess their relevance and value. Books require a significant time investment, and while this effort is often worthwhile, it’s essential to discern which titles truly deserve your attention.
Over time, I developed a guiding question to help prioritize my reading: Which books can genuinely facilitate positive behavioral change while expanding my knowledge? I engage in research through reviews and platforms like Goodreads to find the answers, and although I don't always succeed, I've become more adept at identifying impactful reads.
Here are seven pivotal books that have positively influenced my behavior. I refer to them as "behavior-changing books" because they ignite the desire for transformation and equip you with the tools to overcome old habits.
Section 1.1: Deep Work by Cal Newport
This book is essential, regardless of your profession. It has fundamentally altered my approach to time management and productivity. Newport emphasizes the detrimental effects of both digital and physical distractions on our potential. Moreover, he elucidates how top performers guard their focus and prioritize substantial work over superficial tasks.
Behavior change after reading: Following this book, I deactivated most of my social media accounts (with the exception of LinkedIn) to safeguard my focus for high-priority tasks. I now ensure I dedicate a minimum of two hours each day to deep work. On days I fall short, I notice a marked decline in my performance.
Section 1.2: You’re Not Listening by Kate Murphy
You’ve likely encountered numerous articles about improving listening skills, often reiterating familiar advice: listen to understand, maintain positive body language, avoid interruptions, and minimize distractions. While these suggestions are valid, they often lack depth regarding their significance and practical application.
Murphy’s book dives into the science and biology of listening, drawing insights from expert listeners worldwide. Her rich blend of research and personal anecdotes reveals how effective listening can unlock opportunities that might otherwise be missed. The thought-provoking nature of her findings makes this the best book on listening I’ve ever read.
Behavior change after reading: Although I’ve just finished this book and haven't fully implemented its lessons, it has heightened my awareness of my tendency to fill silences with my own words. I now strive to embrace pauses in conversation, using them as opportunities to pose questions that encourage deeper responses.

Section 1.3: Fanatical Prospecting by Jeb Blount
This book reshaped my understanding of sales when I transitioned from an Individual Contributor role to a managerial position. During my time as an IC, prospecting was my primary focus, but this shifted as I took on new responsibilities.
Blount emphasizes strategies to enhance prospecting skills while instilling a crucial mindset shift: from "Always be Closing" to "Always be Opening." This change in perspective alleviates the pressure of closing every opportunity and fosters a more open approach.
Behavior change after reading: I now prioritize prospecting by reaching out to at least three new prospects daily, despite managing a team of over 15. While I occasionally miss this goal, I quickly return to the habit. Although prospecting can be uncomfortable, it remains a vital skill that opens doors to remarkable opportunities.
Section 1.4: Millionaire Fastlane by MJ DeMarco
This book is often overlooked in recommendation lists, yet it has profoundly influenced my mindset. Instead of marveling at others' wealth, DeMarco encourages readers to ask, "How can I achieve this?"
This shift from a consumption-focused mindset to one of creation has allowed me to adopt an entrepreneurial mentality, even within my current role. I now view time as my most valuable resource, guiding my decision-making process.
Behavior change after reading: I've shifted my focus to producing rather than consuming. This change has led me to create over 50 blog articles, 30 newsletter pieces, and even a podcast. My decisions are now based on the value of time saved, rather than immediate costs.
Section 1.5: The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter
I frequently recommend this book, as it addresses the growing comfort levels of our generation. Today, convenience is at our fingertips, but this comfort can hinder our growth.
Easter presents compelling arguments about the negative impacts of excessive comfort on our physical and mental well-being, supported by both evidence and personal stories.
Behavior change after reading:
- Hunger — This book has inspired me to practice intermittent fasting, which has significantly improved my health and mental clarity.
- Boredom — I’ve rediscovered the value of solitude by taking walks without distractions, allowing my mind to wander and generate creative ideas.
Section 1.6: The Phoenix Project by Gene Kim
Despite being a novel focused on IT and DevOps, this book has reshaped my perception of knowledge work. It narrates the journey of a struggling company that revitalizes its fortunes through prioritization and agile practices.
While the principles may seem technical, they can be applied to various aspects of our work lives, leading to meaningful improvements.
Behavior change after reading:
- Continuous improvement — I now concentrate on small, incremental changes rather than seeking drastic transformations.
- Visualizing my work — By making my work visible, I can better manage and tackle it, significantly enhancing my focus and productivity.
Section 1.7: No-Drama Discipline by Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson
This parenting book has been invaluable as I navigate challenges with my three-year-old. It encourages a balanced response to behavioral challenges, promoting understanding rather than frustration.
The authors stress that children's brains are continually developing, and our expectations can often be misaligned with their capacities. This book provides insights that foster a deeper connection with my child.
Behavior change after reading: I’ve learned to approach my son's tantrums with empathy, seeking to understand his feelings rather than immediately reacting. This approach fosters a sense of security and encourages open communication between us.
