The Creative Journey: Embracing Our Inherent Ability

Chapter 1: Understanding Creativity

Creativity is a fundamental aspect of human existence that we all possess.

What does it truly mean to be creative? For much of my life, I leaned heavily on logic, making it difficult to grasp the concept of creativity. I didn't see myself as a robot, yet I certainly didn't feel like an artistic genius either. I have always been proficient at executing ideas, pushing for excellence and precision.

This inclination can be traced back to the rote learning methods I encountered during my education in Asia, which emphasized clear-cut problem-solving. However, as life evolved, I discovered that creativity was essential. The straightforward solutions that once sufficed were no longer adequate. To differentiate myself, I needed to innovate—crafting unique narratives that resonated with my identity and creating a brand that reflected my personality, all rooted in my creative impulses.

Today, I view creativity as a form of art.

The Search for Creativity Within

Creativity manifests in various ways and is not limited to grand creations or groundbreaking inventions. It can be found in the small moments of everyday life, such as:

  • Composing a heartfelt note to a close friend.
  • Curating the perfect playlist for a road trip.
  • Choosing an outfit for a loved one from a thrift store.
  • Adding a unique twist to a pasta recipe (keep this secret from your Italian friends!).

From the moment we enter the world, we are compelled to create. This innate desire to share our essence with others is what binds us as human beings.

The Art of Expression

For me, writing emerged as my primary outlet for creativity, demanding the transformation of nothing into something. It was a significant leap for me to start writing and to share my voice with the world. I, too, experience apprehensions about judgment and criticism. However, what drives me forward is the understanding that my creations have the potential to resonate with at least one individual—whether through my writing, music, or films.

Creating is an expression of our identity. Over time, I have realized that personalizing my work adds genuine value to the world, bringing me immense happiness. This journey has instilled in me a profound sense of purpose, knowing that I contribute something original to the universe.

The Misconception About Creativity

At times, we may lose sight of what it means to be creative. We might undermine our abilities by believing we aren’t worthy of admiration or that our work lacks significance. The influence of social media, where success is often measured in likes and followers, can skew our perception of creativity.

We may convince ourselves that our contributions are inconsequential in the vast landscape of creation, leading us to halt our efforts. Yet, creativity is not a competitive race. What I cherish about it is its abstract and subjective nature; it cannot be quantified or ranked.

Although some studies indicate that creativity might be influenced by genetics, this should not deter our desire to create, develop, and inspire. Every accomplished artist, producer, or writer began from scratch. Remember, there are no invisible barriers to creativity; we are all in this together.

Just Make It Yours

Ultimately, we are all creators—regardless of our backgrounds, strengths, or experiences. Creating does not have to be groundbreaking; it simply needs to be genuine and reflective of who you are.

Here’s my guiding principle when creating:

  • Infuse a part of yourself into your work.
  • Release attachment to the results.
  • Focus on what resonates with your heart.

Always remember, what you create holds significance, and above all, enjoy the process!
