Chapter 1: A Look Back at Joanna Cameron's Legacy
It has been nearly a year since the beloved actress Joanna Cameron, known for her role in the iconic 1970s children's series, The Secrets of Isis, passed away. She departed on October 22, 2021, at the young age of 70. Despite the show’s modest budget, Cameron’s dynamic performance infused life into the scripts, adding depth to this imaginative program.
During her college years, Cameron formed a friendship with Linda Hope, the daughter of the legendary Bob Hope, who cast her in the film How To Commit Marriage in 1969. This opportunity launched a series of roles on both film and television throughout the 1970s, including notable performances in B.S. I Love You and the dark comedy Pretty Maids All In a Row. At one stage, Cameron was reportedly in the running for the lead role in Love Story, which ultimately went to Ali MacGraw.
Cameron’s extensive television credits included appearances in The Bold Ones, Marcus Welby, M.D., McMillan & Wife, and The Amazing Spiderman. She also holds the distinction of featuring in the highest number of commercials by any actress, earning her a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.
In 1975, she became the titular character in Isis, portraying Andrea Thomas, a young science teacher who discovers a magical amulet while in Egypt, granting her the powers of the goddess Isis.
The series premiered during a time when superhero shows were a staple on both primetime and Saturday mornings, alongside hits like The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, Wonder Woman, and The Incredible Hulk. Over the course of its run, 22 episodes of Isis were aired on CBS from September 6, 1975, to September 3, 1977, often in conjunction with another superhero series, Shazam!, which starred Billy Gray.
Cameron’s last credited role was in the 1980 television film Swan Song. After her time in front of the camera, she transitioned to a career in home healthcare as a nurse for a decade, followed by a successful stint in hotel marketing.
According to Joanna Pang Atkins, who played Cindy Lee on The Secrets of Isis, Cameron's passing was attributed to complications from a stroke.
