Chapter 1: The Freedom of the Open Road
In the summer of 1987, I acquired my first vehicle—a used, crimson red Volkswagen. It had a sporty steering wheel and a rumbling exhaust, which made it a delight to drive. While it may not have been anything extraordinary, it was a symbol of my newfound independence.
With some extra cash, I installed a "top-notch" radio cassette player. Remember cassette tapes? Do they even exist anymore? I preferred my custom mixtapes over the constant interruptions from DJs and commercials that plagued radio stations.
Once I had that car, everything changed. There’s something exhilarating about driving while blasting music. It embodies a sense of freedom and control, a celebration of youth and vitality. Every day transformed into an adventure—eating, sleeping, waking up, and hitting the gas toward destinations that had previously felt unattainable. The sound of classic '80s music filled the air, amplifying the joy of living in the moment.
I suspect many from my generation have similar stories about their first cars, sharing how it opened up a world of possibilities—exploring, living freely, and embracing life. Car ownership was indeed a transformative experience.

My "First" Road Trip
One unforgettable adventure was my autumn road trip through New England. It was October, and my friends and I planned a four-day escapade that would take us to cities like Boston, Portsmouth, Burlington, and Newport. We even aimed to visit Cape Cod, creating a spontaneous itinerary that began in Hartford, Connecticut.
Although I had traveled before, being the designated driver meant I was responsible for planning and executing this trip. It gave me a new appreciation for road trips, stepping into the role of the “leader.”
We relied on a physical map—remember those?—as we set out to conquer our journey. Despite having a clear route, we quickly found ourselves lost after missing a turn, a common occurrence in the pre-GPS era. Finding a place to stay was also a challenge without online reviews.
Our stay at the Great Bay Motel is a vivid memory—the overpowering scent of disinfectants left us feeling queasy the next morning. However, those moments of getting lost and facing discomfort made our trip all the more memorable. We stumbled upon hidden gems we would have overlooked with modern technology, learning to navigate life without digital assistance. It was these struggles and unexpected adventures that enriched our experience.
The Gen-X Way of Life
A few weeks back, while listening to my students present their ideas for technological solutions to global issues, I was reminded of my own experiences. They explored various problems and showcased their creativity and thoughtfulness. However, something felt absent.
One group drew a comparison between my generation and theirs, discussing how we eagerly anticipated getting our driver's licenses and the sense of freedom that came with owning a car. They aptly noted that younger generations no longer feel the same need for personal vehicles, as they are more focused on connection and sharing through digital platforms.
The differences between generations are evident. Young individuals likely remember their first smartphones as fondly as I recall my first car. But the real distinction lies in the experiences and opportunities presented by technology.
As young Gen-X-ers, we concentrated on specific tasks—such as planning road trips. The anticipation, preparation, and execution required us to learn crucial life lessons about discovery and survival. We defined what it meant to have fun—doing things for ourselves and experiencing freedom intertwined with responsibility, which allowed for personal growth.
In contrast, today’s youth often feel pressure to attract attention on social media, striving to stand out in a crowded digital landscape. This new form of freedom can feel burdensome, as they must navigate the fickle judgments of their peers.
It's increasingly challenging to find true enjoyment or opportunities for genuine personal development in this environment.
Will today’s youth look back on their first smartphones with the same nostalgia I have for my first car in thirty years? I’m inclined to think not.
