Redefining Success Through Output: A Personal Journey

Chapter 1: The Significance of Output
The term "output" holds a special place in my heart, despite my complex associations with it—particularly as it relates to past job dismissals. More than once, I've had supervisors point out, "Alexei, the output isn't there." I fully understood the implication behind those words. In fact, I've coined a phrase to describe my own lack of success: I half-assed it.
While pondering this narrative during my usual evening jog, I realized that "output" lacks a direct translation in Russian. This linguistic nuance aligns with the themes of my recent reflections on serendipity and commitment.
When did I first encounter the term "output"? It's so ubiquitous that pinpointing its origin is difficult. I likely came across it in a math or science course during my early days in the U.S. (1994–1995 in Oklahoma) or later at school in England.
I appreciate the word as it allows me to evaluate various facets of my life, not merely the moments of professional failure.
I've faced setbacks in a couple of startups. Looking back, I see that my efforts fell short. I secured funding, had an intimate understanding of our product, and sought additional investments. I was the visionary, but as the startup began to falter, the output was insufficient. Perseverance without significant output is merely a façade of heroism.
What constitutes "enough" output? During my teenage years, I dedicated myself to my studies, achieving academic excellence and securing a place at Cambridge. My early career in investment banking was marked by hard work and success, even as a junior analyst.
Recently, I've thrived as a runner. The odometer on my Garmin, purchased in the summer of 2020, is nearing 10,000 miles. That’s tangible output. The sheer volume of blood and oxygen my body has utilized during these runs is considerable.
In terms of writing, I'm generating substantial output, albeit harder to quantify. However, my audience continues to grow, affirming the existence of that output. You can explore my 723 stories on Medium and 134 on Substack to see for yourself.
Assessing the output of others can be challenging, yet it's uncommon to witness someone achieving success in business or athletics without substantial output.
One personal benchmark for output is my commitment to daily production. Not only do I aim for quantity, but I strive to generate new work daily without breaks. Yesterday, I completed a twenty-mile run, and today, I ran again. In just the last forty-eight hours, I've crafted my fourth story across Medium and Substack while also networking within the writing community. At this stage, financial gain isn't my primary concern; I find joy in writing and am eager to evolve as a writer.
In my view, output is the most critical factor in achieving success. A greater quantity can lead to improved quality and increases the likelihood of fortunate opportunities. Output is the lifeblood of success.
