Unearthing the Mysteries of New York's UFO Capital

The Allure of Pine Bush's UFO Culture
In the quaint town of Pine Bush, New York, a curious sign hangs in the local barbershop, asking, “Have you encountered a UFO in this area?” The emphasis on the word “You” in red draws the attention of passersby. Despite its modest population of just 1,780, Pine Bush has earned the title of the “UFO Capital of New York.” This designation is celebrated annually through a UFO festival, and the town showcases its fascination with extraterrestrial life through alien-themed decorations adorning homes, businesses, and even a prominent alien statue on Main Street.
Photographer Kate Truisi, whose home is a short drive from Pine Bush, has long held a fascination for the bizarre and the paranormal. Captivated by reports of UFO sightings, she ventured to Pine Bush to capture photographic evidence of the phenomena that had piqued her interest. In a conversation with Atlas Obscura, Truisi recounted her adventures and shared some of the captivating images she captured during her visit.
The History of Sightings
Truisi discovered that the Pine Bush area has been a hotspot for unexplained phenomena since the early 1950s. However, it wasn’t until the 1980s that the town truly gained recognition for its unusual activity. Between 1983 and 1987, nearly 2,000 sightings were reported, leading to the establishment of a hotline for residents to share their experiences throughout the Hudson Valley. Ellen Crystall's book, “Silent Invasion” (1991), chronicles these events and helped cement Pine Bush’s status as a destination for UFO enthusiasts. While reports of sightings have declined in recent years, locals still claim to witness odd occurrences in the sky.
Truisi focused her photographic narrative on Butch, the town's barber and self-proclaimed historian. On her first visit, she began her exploration at the Cups and Saucers café, realizing it was a perfect spot to engage locals about the UFO tales circulating in the community. Butch serves as a sort of archivist, amassing stories and artifacts related to UFOs, with his walls adorned with newspaper clippings, photographs, and various memorabilia.
According to Butch, one of his friends encountered a tall humanoid figure near the town's edge. The sighting, albeit brief, left a lasting impression as the figure vanished into the nearby trees. The community of Pine Bush has developed a distinctive “UFO culture,” with some residents firmly believing in the existence of extraterrestrial activity due to their own experiences, while others remain skeptical but open-minded about the stories they've heard.
Voices of the Witnesses
Truisi has gathered various accounts from individuals who have observed unusual lights and shapes in the sky, but none have reported abduction experiences. Occasionally, she and friends venture into the mountains at night to stargaze or watch meteor showers. During her explorations in Pine Bush, she has visited several locations known for elevated UFO activity, though she prefers to do so during daylight due to apprehensions about nighttime excursions.
