Navigating Workplace Relationships: Colleagues vs. Friends

Written on

Chapter 1: The Illusion of Work Friends

You might think that your closest friends are your coworkers, but that perception could lead you into a precarious situation. Why should we reconsider treating our software engineering colleagues as friends? Let’s delve into the reality of workplace relationships.

Your so-called friends might abandon you at the first chance they get. If you're inclined toward the more contemplative side, you're likely aware of this truth. Ultimately, everyone will leave—yes, even your grandmother will one day pass on, perhaps prompting a moment of reflection. But your work companions? They'll chase after a 5% raise or improved health benefits and vanish from your life, often with just a brief wave as they grab their belongings.

If you believe you can maintain these friendships via LinkedIn, you might want to reconsider that optimistic fantasy. You're unlikely to remain in a job solely for the sake of your friends—unless your ambition is severely lacking, which might explain your choice to pursue a career in software development.

You’re at work to earn a living.

This might seem straightforward, yet many software developers appear confused about their professional purpose. The answer is likely in your employment contract: arrive on time, create code that sometimes passes reviews, and then go home. We don't need you lingering around after hours.

Sure, the ping pong table may give the impression that you should stay for a few friendly games or a round of Mario Kart, but spending too much time on these distractions during work can be detrimental to your productivity. When your last day arrives, remember that the champion of the ping pong table won’t be joining you.

Work is driven by self-interest, not by altruistic friendships.

Have you ever felt betrayed at work?

Not in a literal sense; we don’t see murder in the office, particularly with witnesses around. Office politics can be ruthless. Engaging in a knowledge transfer with a colleague who has been let go can only feel justified if it was a clear “us vs. them” scenario where you came out on top.

Promotion struggles can be even more cutthroat.

In any organization, there are numerous workers and only a handful of leaders. These leaders enjoy higher pay and greater respect, and during economic downturns, they are often the last to face layoffs. If you prefer to avoid responsibility while coding, that’s a laid-back approach, but be prepared for a job search when the economy falters.

Love in the workplace?

Some companies, particularly in the U.S., actively discourage romantic relationships among employees. The excitement surrounding new equipment can make everyone a bit reckless. Both you and your partner could jeopardize your careers for a fleeting moment of fun, especially since many organizations are wary of personal relationships developing on the job.

So, if you've made a friend at work, it's wise to maintain boundaries—or be ready to update your resume with a plausible reason for leaving your last position.

It depends...

While friendships can blossom in the workplace—perhaps over drinks after a long day—it's crucial to safeguard your career. Workplace regulations should always take precedence over personal relationships.

So, if you're in a work environment, their rules will take precedence over your budding friendships or romances.

Would you really want that?

Instead of treating your workplace as a social hub, consider using dating apps for your social interactions.
