In recent years, social media platforms have increasingly fostered a climate of skepticism and distrust among users.

Social media has become a battleground for trust, with experts often being challenged by individuals lacking comprehensive knowledge on various subjects. Personal narratives are frequently disregarded, as if those online possess a more accurate understanding than the individuals sharing their lived experiences. A simple scroll through Twitter reveals numerous threads demanding credible sources to back personal claims.
I often ponder the reasons behind this trend. Understanding the science behind vaccines seems straightforward to me, so why does the anti-vaccine movement persist? Similarly, given that fossil fuel usage drives climate change, why do conspiracy theories continue to circulate, undermining this reality? I believed that if people simply listened to experts, they would grasp the truth as I do.
However, this line of thinking reflects my first misstep: relying on my perspective as a basis for understanding. My background in science provided me with the tools to comprehend scientific principles. After years of studying and engaging with scientific literature, it would seem irrational for me to suddenly reject scientific consensus.
Hypothetically, if the foundations of science were to be discredited overnight, would I abandon my scientific beliefs? Likely not, as belief perseverance is a powerful force.
Section 1.2: Understanding Belief Perseverance
Belief perseverance is a cognitive bias where individuals cling to previously held beliefs, even when they have been disproven. This phenomenon is akin to the more commonly recognized Confirmation Bias, which describes the tendency to favor information that supports our existing beliefs. The distinction lies in the fact that Confirmation Bias involves seeking supportive evidence, while belief perseverance involves outright rejection of disconfirming information, regardless of new evidence.
If educational systems promote logical reasoning, why do discredited beliefs persist? One explanation may stem from our formative years. Children, without formal training, construct their understanding of the world based on limited experiences. These early insights shape their hypotheses about various concepts, laying the groundwork for their future beliefs.
Belief perseverance is not inherently negative; it forms the foundation of our understanding of ourselves and the world. However, the durability of these beliefs can be both intriguing and alarming.
As individuals mature, their capacity for epistemic cognition evolves. Yet, this development does not guarantee the abandonment of disproven beliefs. On the contrary, individuals may craft intricate justifications for their beliefs, especially when those beliefs are personally significant.
Chapter 2: The Role of Social Media in Modern Beliefs
Social media has transformed how we seek validation for our beliefs. It allows individuals, especially those from marginalized groups, to connect and find support outside their immediate communities. In these digital spaces, individuals can express thoughts that may have been silenced in traditional settings.
But this dynamic also includes individuals with extremist views seeking affirmation. The desire for connection is a fundamental human trait, regardless of the beliefs in question.
This raises a dilemma: should we restrict these voices on mainstream platforms? While banning harmful individuals could lead to a healthier online environment, the challenge lies in defining what constitutes "violent speech" versus "truth." Even automated systems may struggle to accurately discern these distinctions, as biases from developers can influence the parameters of such algorithms.
Where do we go from here?
Despite my frustrations, I sometimes yearn for a straightforward solution. I question whether society would be better off without the pervasive influence of social media. However, this perspective overlooks the reality that differing beliefs have always existed, but they were more easily suppressed in the past.
I return to the story of David and Goliath as recounted by Malcolm Gladwell. David, armed with his sling, faced Goliath not as an underdog but as a competent strategist. He understood his strengths and leveraged them against a seemingly overpowering foe.
Had this battle occurred in the era of social media, interpretations might vary dramatically. We could witness narratives that emphasize the deceptive nature of appearances or advocate for unconventional solutions.
Mainstream historical narratives often favor those in power, while today's digital landscape allows for a multitude of perspectives. However, what happens when these perspectives are rooted in bigotry or resist factual evidence? Should we simply erase these voices from social media?
I believe the solution lies in consistently asserting our truths, ensuring that they resonate louder than harmful narratives.
