Navigating the Decision to Pursue or Release Your Dreams

Understanding the Dream Dilemma
When clients pose the question of whether to abandon their dreams, I like to respond with a thought-provoking inquiry: What’s your alternative? If you decide to stop pursuing your aspirations, what will you do instead? How would your life change?
Do you honestly believe that stepping away from your dreams will lead to a more fulfilling, simpler, or enjoyable existence? Or is it merely an inclination to evade the challenges associated with striving for what you desire?
In my view, it’s never advisable to relinquish your dreams. They hold significance for a reason; they aren't merely whims you've conjured, but rather intrinsic desires that resonate deeply within you. Just as you have preferences for certain foods, you inevitably have dreams that speak to you.
Denying these aspirations may seem manageable at first—akin to claiming you don't enjoy chocolate cake—but ultimately, the craving remains. The goal is not to surrender your dreams, but rather to explore new approaches to them.
Consider this analogy: you may relish the taste of chocolate cake, yet aware of its unhealthiness, you might seek out a healthier substitute that satisfies your sweet tooth. Conversely, denying your desires leads to a state of disillusionment, where you feign indifference but still harbor a yearning for what you truly want.
Thus, if you still feel drawn to a particular dream, that desire is very much alive. Perhaps circumstances have changed; maybe you believe you’ve aged out of an aspiration, or perhaps life has taken you in a different direction that makes pursuing that dream seem impractical. However, there is always a path forward.
Take the aspiration to become an artist as an example. In later years, you may find your hands are no longer as steady, or you lack the stamina to engage in long hours of painting. Yet, what initially inspired your passion for that dream? Was it the creativity it offered, the journey of self-discovery, or simply a love for art?
Identifying the root of your dream can unveil alternative methods of engagement. Even if you struggle to pinpoint your motivation, engaging in artistic activities—regardless of your current skill level—can still provide a sense of fulfillment.
While you might not attain the heights you once envisioned, the alternative—living with the uncertainty of whether you could have succeeded—can be far less satisfying.
That said, I don’t advocate for a relentless pursuit of dreams at the expense of your well-being. It's vital to engage in self-reflection before deciding to give up. Ask yourself: Do you still have a desire for that dream? Have you truly explored every option available to you? Are you genuinely at peace with letting go?
If you no longer feel a connection to that dream, or if you find no joy in it, then it may be acceptable to stop pursuing it. However, relinquish your dreams only when you feel completely satisfied with the effort you’ve invested. Otherwise, consider adjusting your approach to pursuing them.
While one path may appear blocked, there are countless other avenues yet to be explored that could still lead you to your dreams!
