Making Morning Workouts More Manageable
Written on
Chapter 1: Embracing the Morning
Last fall, I resolved to transform into a morning person. I relish the satisfying feeling that follows a morning workout, but often my mornings would dissolve into checking work emails, brewing coffee, and preparing materials for the school day. Before I knew it, I was rushing to get ready for work.
After recently accessing the library's copy of James Clear's Atomic Habits, I realized I need my own. The book is filled with insights worth revisiting; I've listened to Chapter 2 multiple times using the audiobook. Clear's ideas have been quite affirming, and I want to share four strategies that have made my morning workouts more attainable by preparing for success.
- Let There Be Light
I utilize Amazon Alexa to wake up each morning. My bedroom, complete with cozy bedding and blackout curtains, can easily tempt me back to sleep with just a quick snooze. For several months, I've programmed Alexa to illuminate my desk and bedroom lights at 5:45 AM, just before my actual alarm. The gentle warm white light mimics natural sunlight and helps create a peaceful waking environment.
- Designated Workout Gear
To facilitate my workouts, I’ve separated my workout clothes from regular laundry. I now have distinct bins for towels, regular clothes, and workout attire. When my workout clothes bin is running low or full, it serves as a reminder to do that specific laundry, ensuring I always have what I need for exercise.
- Yoga Mat at the Ready
I enjoy practicing yoga using the Peloton App or SaraBeth Yoga on YouTube for a 20-30 minute session. Without a dedicated workout room, I’ve arranged my living space to accommodate yoga by keeping my mat and blocks nearby, ready to roll out after I’ve changed into workout clothes and had my coffee.
- Energetic Warm-Ups
On some mornings, I manage to fit in 20 minutes of yoga followed by 30-35 minutes of cycling, provided I can resist the temptation of my laptop. These mornings feel the best! Hannah Frankson has a dynamic cycling warm-up video that kicks off with Queen's iconic "We Will, We Will Rock You." At the 2-minute mark, she energizes the audience with a motivating "C’mon man," reinforcing how uplifting music can elevate our mood. Just five minutes post-session, I find my mind and body primed for an extended ride.
Now, it’s time for me to dive back into the second half of Atomic Habits. What’s on your reading list?
