For the study, 14 healthy participants underwent a six-week sleep restriction where they averaged 90 minutes less sleep than their typical 7.5 to 8 hours. Blood samples taken before and after this period revealed increased levels of both stem cells and white blood cells.

In parallel experiments with mice, researchers disrupted their sleep by waking them multiple times throughout the night. This led to similar findings: an increase in both stem and white blood cells, along with altered DNA in these cells.

Dr. Swirski emphasized, “Our study demonstrates that sleep disruption profoundly affects the programming and production rate of immune cells, diminishing their protective functions and exacerbating infections. These changes appear to have lasting consequences.” The results were published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine.

Even after a period of recuperative sleep, the negative effects persisted in the mice. While mice are not humans, their biological systems provide valuable insights for scientific inquiry. Previous research has hinted at the limitations of compensatory sleep. While it may feel good to catch up on rest, some damage to the body and mind may be irreversible. Experts suggest that it is feasible to make up for lost sleep occasionally, but chronic sleep deprivation over several days or weeks likely causes significant harm, often manifesting through symptoms like fatigue and irritability.

The extensive body of research highlights the critical role of sleep in maintaining optimal brain function, physical health, and emotional well-being. Dr. Marishka Brown, director of the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research, stated, “Sleep is vital for the proper functioning of nearly every cell and organ in the body.” She noted that these insights support findings from larger population studies, which have established a protective association between sufficient sleep and various health conditions, including heart disease, cancer, and dementia.

Experts recommend that most adults aim for seven to eight hours of sleep. Alarmingly, around one-third of adults report not getting enough rest, while approximately 77.9% of high school students fail to meet the minimum sleep recommendations.

For many adults, improving sleep quality and, consequently, health can be achieved through several proactive steps. These include reducing alcohol intake, establishing a regular bedtime, increasing physical activity, spending more time outdoors, and developing effective strategies to manage stress and anxiety.
