Honesty: A Journey Towards Self-Truth and Authenticity

Chapter 1: The Importance of Honesty
Let’s face it—most of us could benefit from being more truthful.
My own tendency to tell little white lies often surfaces in mundane conversations. For instance, when someone asks about my weekend plans or my thoughts on "House of the Dragon," I tend to fabricate elaborate stories. In reality, my weekend is likely spent with a book and my couch, yet I find myself claiming grand adventures or raving about a show I haven't even watched beyond its pilot episode.
This pattern is frustrating, especially since there's no real need to mislead anyone. But the dishonesty I impose on myself is far more damaging. I often find myself lying about my satisfaction with my job, my relationships, or the limited travel experiences I have. This spirals beyond mere white lies into a deeper state of denial and frustration.
What can we do to change this? How do we stop deceiving ourselves and others, whether intentionally or unintentionally?
Section 1.1: Acknowledging the Problem
As a wise person once said, “The first step to solving your problem is admitting there is one.”
Historically, I’ve been a poor liar. My father could easily see through my attempts at deception, making it clear that I lacked the finesse to pull off a convincing story. Rather than sneaking out or exaggerating my accomplishments, I faced consequences head-on.
However, just because I wasn't good at lying doesn't mean I didn't lie. Realizing that I could deceive and that I was doing so too frequently allowed me to grasp the extent of my issues. Acknowledging the problem was the first step towards addressing it.
Section 1.2: The Power of Thoughtful Communication
“Think before you speak” is a piece of advice often given, but rarely heeded.
In our fast-paced conversations, we rush to respond without truly considering our words. This often leads to muddled exchanges filled with half-truths and unintentional lies.
By taking a moment to think through my responses, I’ve almost completely eliminated my tendency to tell white lies. Jordan Peterson refers to this practice as “guarding your speech.” Words are powerful—they can hurt or heal. Hence, we must use them wisely. I now prioritize my words, recognizing their potential impact.
Section 1.3: Discovering Your True Desires
What about the false narratives we create for ourselves?
In the past, I’ve rationalized poor choices and disguised negative feelings as positive ones. While some of this behavior might stem from self-defense mechanisms, most were simply acts of self-deception. I knew something was amiss but chose to ignore it, adhering to the notion of “what I should be doing.”
It's essential to set aside societal expectations and focus on what you genuinely want. Perhaps it starts with identifying what you don’t want. Personally, I've decided I will never work in an office again or allow my time to be dictated by others. Once I clearly defined my dislikes, it became easier to navigate toward what I truly desire.
Living authentically means no justifications, excuses, or falsehoods are necessary.
