Section 1.1: The Language of Labels

Have you ever thought about the words inscribed on your clothing? I recently played with some kittens and noticed something curious: the button on my jeans had tiny letters I had overlooked. It read "Levi Strauss Co. S.F. Cal." Even in abbreviated form, that's a lot of hidden language! Levi's is just one brand among countless others.

This realization leads me to ponder: why do we all act as walking billboards for various companies, perhaps even more than the clothes accumulating in our laundry?

Despite the prevalence of logos, I tend to steer clear of them on my apparel, bags, and footwear unless it's a cause I truly support. Occasionally, when volunteering at events, I find myself in branded T-shirts. Yet, I can’t help but feel conflicted: Is this item a product of fast fashion? What environmental costs are associated with it? Will I ever wear this again?

Subsection 1.1.1: The Inner Conflict

Even though I sometimes feel guilty for my skepticism, I still resist. The reality is that we are all unwittingly promoting brands, not out of love, but simply because it has become the norm. When I encounter someone dressed in a unique, quality outfit—something not designed for quick disposal—I make a point to compliment them. However, as a social being, I rarely express why I value their no-logo choices.

Section 1.2: A Shift in Fashion Culture

Reflecting on older films, it’s evident that most individuals weren’t adorned with brand names. Their attire was sharp, stylish, and well-fitted. What has changed?

Years ago, Naomi Klein published "No Logo," which highlighted how consumerism impacts wages, outsourcing, and pollution. This was before the era of personal branding and a society where each individual is involved in promoting fast fashion and its detrimental effects. Ultimately, our discarded items often return to the earth, where the petroleum used to produce them was originally extracted at great cost to the environment.
