Healing Journey: Navigating the Complexities of CPTSD
Written on
The Journey Begins
The first time I encountered the term CPTSD, I was taken aback. I thought to myself, “Isn’t PTSD enough? Now there’s a more complex version?” Experiencing CPTSD is incredibly challenging, and acknowledging it can be even harder. Individuals suffering from this condition aren’t at fault for their struggles, yet without awareness, they may inadvertently pass this trauma to future generations.
So, what exactly is CPTSD? Instead of focusing on clinical definitions, I will share a narrative that illustrates the human experience, the situations that can lead to this condition, and how it can be passed down through families. This story may seem unusual or overly specific, but it might resonate with some of you.
A Glimpse into the Past
On a bright morning, a shift was in the air as summer faded into fall. While the world around her was bustling, for a 7-year-old girl, this season signified the start of second grade. Though shy, she was an eager learner, excited for what the year would bring. Little did she know, this day would shape her life in profound ways.
In the yard, a young man stood, his brow furrowed with anger. Without warning, he seized a small figure before him, lifting her overhead and throwing her forcefully to the ground. The girl, just a few meters away, opened her mouth to cry for help, but her voice caught in her throat. She understood that when her father lost his temper, no one could intervene. Today’s target was her 5-year-old sister, who had dared to leave kindergarten and return home — a frequent “offense.”
Years Down the Line
The young girl grew up, burying many memories, yet that particular scene remained etched in her mind. For over a decade, she was haunted by nightmares, each time witnessing her sister in peril while she stood helpless. Guilt consumed her; she felt an obligation to protect her sister but didn’t know how.
As time passed, she witnessed more of her father’s outbursts directed at her mother and siblings, and even, eventually, at the grandchildren. His cruelty was relentless, and while she was not often the focus of his wrath, the emotional toll of being a bystander was profound. She longed for affection, yet for decades, she cried privately, never having felt her father's embrace.
“What brutality does to a family is it destroys the underlying loveliness.” — Max S. Gordon
With the years, her interest in psychology helped her uncover the roots of her father’s behavior. The blame she once held transformed into compassion. Her father, an orphan, had endured a tumultuous upbringing that left him distrustful and lost. Her mother and grandmother also faced their share of struggles, leading to a cycle of emotional neglect.
Her grandmother was forced into marriage at 12 and bore six children, but instead of nurturing them, she often exhibited aggression. Consequently, her mother, raised in such an environment, lacked the tools to nurture her own children. She frequently projected her anxieties onto them, unaware of the damage this caused.
The cycle of transgenerational trauma continued, leading to patterns of distrust, low self-esteem, and a desire for isolation among the siblings. As adults, they found themselves trapped in unhealthy dynamics and further emotional abuse.
“We must put an end to these draining cycles,” the girl resolved.
However, raising awareness among her family proved to be a daunting task. With little support, the burden felt insurmountable.
Facing the Weight of the Past
She often tried to suppress her discomfort, grappling with her tumultuous feelings. Although she worked towards forgiveness, unresolved issues lingered. Unexpected disappointments would reawaken doubts and overwhelming questions.
How could she cleanse the past and find her place in the world?
Pursuing What Matters
Each morning, intrusive thoughts filled her mind, yet a persistent inner voice urged her, “You must move forward and pursue what truly matters!” This voice brought a hint of humor, as, at mid-life, she felt uncertain about what that truly meant. Many essential elements that could have given her life purpose were missing. What remained to chase? Was it the mundane?
Would career achievements fill the void left by her father's absence? Would new friendships restore her youth, untainted by lost opportunities? Could household chores distract her from emotional wounds that still bled from years of neglect?
She dreamed of raising her children in a way that spared them from the pain she endured, but the mental energy to pursue that goal often eluded her.
Why was life so much more complex than she had wished? Despite her aspirations, she often found herself prioritizing avoidance over action.
If only she had more understanding and supportive people around her, perhaps life could be more bearable. Yet, she still believed in the possibility of thriving instead of merely surviving.
Amidst the struggles, there remained hope. The past would not dictate her present or future.
One day, while hanging laundry, she gazed at the vibrant blue sky, the sunlight filtering through the trees after a stormy night. A refreshing breeze caressed her face. As tears streamed down her cheeks, she took a deep breath and smiled, recalling the words of Diane Renz, L.P.C.:
“Give yourself permission to raise your hand, to ‘let ’em see you sweat,’ as you see, sense, and set a new direction for yourself.”
