Facing Our Inner Struggles: A Personal Journey to Healing
Written on
Chapter 1: Acknowledging the Shadows
Opening up about personal battles can be incredibly challenging. Today, however, I’ve taken the step to seek assistance.
This decision brings a mix of emotions: a sense of pride, fear, and shame. I feel proud for finally acknowledging my struggles and asking for help, as taking that first step is often the hardest. Once it’s done, continuing on the path becomes significantly easier.
Yet, I am frightened by what might be lurking beneath these struggles. The thought of exposing these hidden parts of myself to someone else is daunting. Additionally, there's a sense of shame tied to my situation. My struggles don’t stem from mental health issues, depression, or hunger—yet they still impact my daily life in profound ways. Some might label it a "First-World problem," and while there is truth in that, it remains a valid part of my reality. It doesn't sit at the bottom of Maslow's hierarchy, but it occasionally influences my relationships with those I hold dear. Thus, I have chosen to ask for help.
It’s important to recognize that we all grapple with our demons. For many, these challenges vary in severity, some being overwhelming while others are more manageable or temporary.
What causes these struggles? Is it societal expectations? The pressure of social media? Educational demands? Cultural influences? Or perhaps it's the pressure we impose on ourselves to conform to certain ideals? The answer is elusive; it might be a combination of all these factors.
I hold deep admiration for public figures—athletes, celebrities, and artists—who bravely confront their demons rather than adhering to audience expectations. The higher one's public profile, the harder it can be to take a step back and disappoint followers.
Consider Simone Biles during the Tokyo Olympics, Stromae on his world tour, Lady Gaga with her personal battles, or even Dwayne Johnson, who, despite his strong exterior, faces his own challenges. These individuals have spoken out, inspiring many in the process.
Mental struggles are often more challenging to combat because they remain hidden from view.
Imagine you have a dislocated shoulder; the pain is evident and can be confirmed by an X-ray. If you suffer from appendicitis, medical imaging will provide clarity. But what about mental struggles? How can one articulate feelings that are not physically visible? This is a daunting task.
To many, I might seem to lead a dream life, filled with bright days and wonderful moments. Yet, when shadows creep in, they can cloud everything.
Stop Feeding the Shadows
For nearly a decade, I've battled the nagging voice of my inner struggles. Thankfully, it has remained a faint whisper, but the energy expended trying to silence it has been substantial. It's exhausting and frustrating to grapple with understanding the source of these feelings.
Am I confronting a genuine issue, or am I merely exaggerating a minor concern?
In my professional roles as a public speaker, expedition leader, and sailboat captain, I find that people depend on me to project strength and stability, especially in challenging situations. There's a prevailing belief that strong leaders should be devoid of personal issues and exude perfection. However, I believe this perception is a facade we have created over time.
True leadership encompasses the courage to share vulnerabilities, emotions, and struggles. Today, I am relieved to face these challenges before they grow too overwhelming and start to harm my relationships with those I cherish.
It’s often said that talking to someone can be beneficial. Writing also helps clarify thoughts and emotions. I’m engaging in both practices now.
Starting the Journey
If you find yourself grappling with your own shadows, I urge you to confront them. The process will ultimately lead to greater strength.
Take care.
