My journey into science began in high school. During my sophomore year, my chemistry teacher, Mrs. Leigh Eriks, initiated our first class with an unconventional discussion. With a background in chemistry, she transitioned from the industry to educate high schoolers. “While I’m here to teach you chemistry, my primary goal is to ignite your love for science,” she proclaimed. That declaration captured my interest instantly.

The summer between my junior and senior years, I immersed myself in a research lab at Calvin University, learning from both professors and college students. Engaging with science is unique; it positions individuals at the forefront of human knowledge, fostering critical thinking about solutions that challenge our understanding of the world. I realized this was the path I wanted to pursue.

Section 1.2: Academic Pursuits in Biochemistry

As I continued my studies at Calvin, I dedicated much of my free time to my favorite place: the lab. I chose to specialize in biochemistry to deepen my understanding of the research I had engaged in during high school. My summers were filled with learning within a research team focusing on the glucose transporter protein, GLUT1. This protein plays a crucial role in our nervous and red blood cells. By gaining insights into GLUT1, we could potentially identify therapeutic targets for serious conditions like cancer and diabetes.

As graduation drew closer, I realized that the traditional routes of medical or graduate school did not align with the type of impact I sought to achieve. Throughout my academic journey, I had been a devotee of the scientific method—a systematic approach to acquiring knowledge through experimentation and measurement. It involves posing a well-defined question regarding observable phenomena, designing an experiment to test a hypothesis, and analyzing results to draw conclusions. This iterative process fuels our understanding and drives further inquiry. I sought a way to apply my scientific knowledge in a distinctive context.

Chapter 2: Bridging Science and Business

In the past year, I completed my Master of Science in Business at the Catholic University of America. Admittedly, combining business with biochemistry is unconventional. However, this degree enriched my scientific background, equipping me with the necessary tools to view scientific endeavors through a business lens. I firmly believe that science holds the key to addressing many of the challenges facing our global society. Yet, for innovative ideas to flourish, they must transcend the confines of the laboratory. This intersection presents an exciting opportunity for meaningful impact.

In my first semester, I interned at the Case Foundation as a Social Innovation intern, where I gained insights into the common obstacles that entrepreneurs face when launching new ideas. I am passionate about supporting innovators in bringing their solutions to market, particularly in biotechnology. Following this, I contributed as a Research Associate at the International Center for Terrorism Studies at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies under Dr. Yonah Alexander. My work there reinforced my belief that advancements in biotechnology are crucial for effectively addressing bioterrorism.
