Exploring '65': A Sci-Fi Adventure and Its Cosmic Insights

Chapter 1: The Misconceptions of '65'
Initially, I had the impression that '65' was yet another time-traveling science fiction film featuring chrononauts venturing back to the Cretaceous period, resembling a spin-off of the Jurassic Park franchise. My assumptions were completely off base. This film stands out as an exceptional piece of sci-fi action, showcasing a remarkable performance by Adam Driver, who balances toughness with sensitivity.
I had speculated that '65' might be an adaptation of Ray Bradbury's 'A Sound of Thunder', which I reviewed quite some time ago for timetravelnexus.com.

To my surprise, it wasn't another retelling of Bradbury’s iconic story but rather an engaging action film in its own right. Although another adaptation of 'A Sound of Thunder' would be exciting, the timing for it now seems ideal. Delve into the story or read my review to understand my perspective.
The narrative centers around a spacecraft that crashes, facing off against small yet ferocious dinosaurs and an arduous journey for escape, with a pivotal reveal later confirming the setting as Earth—thanks to a rather blatant deus ex machina. Until that point, viewers are left guessing which planet the pilot and his fortunate passenger have landed on, as they become the sole survivors.
The film unfolds like a thrilling rollercoaster filled with dangers posed by both large and small dinosaurs and the challenging landscape that separates the damaged spacecraft from the escape pod. The evolving relationship between the pilot and passenger is beautifully portrayed, adding to the film's emotional resonance.
The seasoned pilot must depend on the courage of the young female passenger, which introduces an additional layer of emotional engagement. There’s also a subplot that enhances the movie's emotional depth and heightens the tension in their relationship, culminating in a well-crafted cinematic experience.
Apart from being an enjoyable 90-minute ride, the film also offers intriguing insights into Fermi's Paradox. This paradox highlights the contradiction between the high likelihood of extraterrestrial intelligence and the lack of evidence supporting their existence.
Fermi's Paradox was formulated by Enrico Fermi, an Italian-American physicist, who famously questioned, “Where is everybody?” during a casual lunch in 1950. This inquiry paved the way for the Drake equation, developed by astrophysicist Frank Drake in 1961, which estimates the number of advanced civilizations likely to inhabit the Milky Way galaxy.
The Drake equation is articulated as follows:
N = (R*) × (fp) × (ne) × (fl) × (fi) × (fc) × (L)
where:
N = the number of civilizations in the Milky Way with which communication may be feasible.
The film introduces another civilization capable of both signaling its existence into space and traveling through it. However, this civilization existed 65 million years ago, leading to questions about its fate—did they vanish before humanity emerged on Earth? This aspect underscores the complexities of the later variables in the Drake equation.
This ancient space-faring civilization had the capability to navigate the cosmos, while humanity is still exploring its own solar system, having only managed to land on a moon of one planet. Will humanity advance further in the future? To achieve this, we require a power source that enables swift and efficient travel, as well as safe returns home. Currently, we are still grappling with our energy needs for daily life, let alone interstellar travel.
Still, it's comforting to imagine that we were not the only intelligent beings in the universe, even if only in fiction and 65 million years ago. It leads one to ponder how many civilizations might have risen and fallen across the cosmos, leaving no trace behind—or did they?
