Embracing the Niche: A Journey into Gothic Literature

Chapter 1: The Challenge of Defining My Audience
In June, Medium Creators initiated an Open Thread asking writers to reflect on their audience. While it may seem like a simple inquiry, I found it to be quite complex. Since embarking on my journey into Gothic literature, I've encountered a variety of responses to my chosen niche. Initially, I doubted that focusing on this area would garner more interest than my previous 20 years spent teaching English as a second language.
Reasons for My Insecurity About My Niche
- Many people are unaware of the true origins and evolution of the term "Gothic."
- The aesthetic aspects often overshadow the literary depth.
- I was still familiarizing myself with the genre and grappling with feelings of imposter syndrome (but who doesn't continue to learn?).
- Successful niches often revolve around guiding others, and I was exhausted from that approach.
- My focus lay in psychological and entertainment themes, which I deeply admire, but I don’t consider myself an expert in those fields.
When Did I Embrace My Authentic Self?
I found confidence in sharing my true self when I began listening to others' experiences in their niches, without feeling pressured to replicate their paths. I learned from my trials and errors in monetizing my interests. Ultimately, I decided to focus solely on the audience that truly resonated with my message, akin to finding my “ideal reader,” a term I prefer over the more commercial "avatar."
It has been a tumultuous journey, but it has led me to uncover the core motivation that inspired me from the start—the desire to assist others in understanding themselves through Gothic literature. This passion was the foundation of my website roadmap, created with my sister's help back in 2006.
Amy Shearn from Medium Creators recognized this fundamental goal, and I was honored to be highlighted alongside eight other talented writers: Heather Cooper, E. Ardincaple, Ju Wakabara Romualdo, Richardwachara, Saif Farooqi, PhD, Kit Desjacques, Nita Jain, and Claudia Koomson.
Chapter 2: The Power of Diverse Voices
The beauty of Medium’s open platform lies in its rich tapestry of voices. Writers from all backgrounds share their unique perspectives…
The first video explores creative bookmark crafts, a movie night with a best friend, and discusses a new favorite romance.
The road to self-discovery can be filled with twists and turns, but the essence of your passions defines you.
A Few Gothic Insights for You
- If you are so passionate about something that you could speak on it endlessly, it is likely a part of your identity.
- Understanding your true self is an introspective journey, often requiring you to confront your fears.
- "Too niche" is a myth; there will always be individuals who think like you. Speak about your passions, and like-minded followers will find you.
- Building your unique platform may become challenging, and you may encounter setbacks. However, there is light in darkness, and finding balance is key in this exploration.
What about you? Where do you stand in your writing journey? How do you define your niche? I would love to hear about your experiences.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
