Chapter 1: The Significance of My Name
Many might assume that because I write under my real name, I have always cherished it. However, that couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, I have only recently come to appreciate my name.
During my childhood, particularly throughout the 1990s, I loathed my name. I was often the sole Helen in my classroom, which only highlighted my uniqueness. I envied those with names like Samantha, Brittany, or Heather—popular names that would have allowed me to blend in more easily.
Section 1.1: The Story Behind My Name
I recall asking my parents about my name when I was around 8 or 9 years old. They revealed that they discovered it in a baby name book. I envisioned them perusing the pages together, sharing laughter and joy over their choice, bridging their linguistic backgrounds.
My mother had two favorites: Susan and Helen. When she asked my father for his preference, he chose Helen, sealing my identity even before I took my first breath.
Subsection 1.1.1: Discovering the Meaning of Helen
I wasn't named after anyone specifically; my parents simply liked the name. While that should have sufficed, I often viewed Helen as rather plain and forgettable. I yearned for a name that hinted at mystery and adventure, longing to be an Esmeralda or Anastasia instead.
My attempts to shorten my name yielded the nickname "Hel," which I rejected due to its association with a fiery underworld. However, my perspective shifted when I began exploring the Internet.
I discovered through my research that my name means "bright" in Greek. Despite my initial dislike, I found joy in the meaning, likening it to the brightness of the moon shining amidst darkness. This revelation inspired my teenage email address: brightselene, merging my name's meaning with Selene, the moon goddess.
Section 1.2: Helen of Troy - A Name with Legacy
Learning that I share my name with Helen of Troy, renowned for her beauty, further transformed my perception. Her story, involving her abduction by Paris and the ensuing Trojan War, added a layer of significance to my name.
Understanding the legendary Helen elevated my name from mundane to remarkable. Today, I proudly carry my name, grateful to my parents for their choice, and aspire to embody the legacy associated with it.
