Embracing Life's Changes: The Power of a Slow Sexy Walk
Written on
Chapter 1: A Journey of Adaptation
Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis nearly 26 years ago, I faced the daunting task of navigating a progressive and life-threatening condition. At that time, I was employed as the District Art Resource Teacher for Kansas City Public Schools, a role rife with stress and uncertainty. Each morning, I would read the local newspaper, anxious to see if my job was still secure, as the work environment felt like a constantly shifting landscape.
In the face of my diagnosis and a recent divorce that left me as a single parent, I realized I had to adapt to thrive.

Section 1.1: The Fight Against MS
With a fierce optimism, I tackled my illness head-on, making minimal changes to my routine. I pursued a Doctorate degree and advanced my career to roles including Elementary Vice Principal, Principal, and eventually Director of Federal Programs.
Initially, I relied on the medications prescribed by my neurologists, which left me feeling increasingly unwell. At 60, I discovered Dr. Terry Wahls and her groundbreaking approach, "The Wahls Protocol," which emphasizes nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle adjustments to reduce stress and promote well-being. I incorporated practices such as Transcendental Meditation, Yoga, Pilates, and Gyrotonics to create a tailored exercise regimen for my condition.
Subsection 1.1.1: Adapting with Style
After ten years of physical therapy recommendations, I accepted the need for a cane. Rather than viewing it as a burden, I chose to infuse humor into my situation. I perfected my “Slow Sexy Walk,” and even after two significant back surgeries and ongoing spinal issues, I keep my unique style alive. My clear lucite cane has become both a fashion accessory and a great conversation starter.
Section 1.2: Finding Joy in Slowness
I used to feel envious of those who walked with ease, but I’ve come to understand that such comparisons are unproductive. I only engage with private trainers for classes due to their high cost, but the one-on-one attention is invaluable. Life can indeed be challenging, but it's our perspective on those challenges that enriches our experiences.
While you might feel tempted to pity my situation, I encourage you to see it differently. There are distinct advantages to living with a disability. Walking at a slower pace reduces the risk of falls, allowing for better balance and control. Embracing this slow pace can lead to a less stressful life, and airports offer me the luxury of being pushed in wheelchairs by incredibly kind individuals—a delightful part of traveling.
Chapter 2: Reveling in the Present
As I reflect on the beauty of savoring life slowly, I recently came across an article by Kakikata that discussed the Japanese concept of enjoying food at a leisurely pace. The idea of finding joy in slowness resonates deeply; we just need to slow down enough to notice it.
Life moves at an astonishing speed, yet there is richness in taking the time to appreciate each moment.
