Embrace the Courage to Be Disliked: A Guide to Authentic Living

Written on

Chapter 1: The Challenge of Authenticity

When contemplating a new venture, we often encounter hesitation. This isn't merely about following popular trends; it's about pursuing endeavors that may be unconventional within your community. For instance, you might aspire to become a skydiver for RedBull, or a writer for Medium, despite a career rooted in software development. What happens when you take that leap?

In this brief article, I will delve into societal norms, explore why we are concerned with others' opinions, and offer insights on how to cultivate bravery in the face of potential disapproval.

Embracing the thoughts of what others might think can be overwhelming. What if they ridicule my aspirations? What if they dismiss my efforts?

These were the very concerns I grappled with when I embarked on my writing journey on Medium. I often questioned whether anyone would find value in my contributions.

A reflection on societal judgments

Who am I to express these ideas? Am I qualified to share my thoughts? What if someone has already articulated these concepts better than I can? Yes, there are certainly more knowledgeable individuals than me discussing similar topics, but the truth remains—none can present them quite like I do.

No two expressions of creativity can be identical. As one renowned artist noted, there is no entirely new art; only new artists.

Section 1.1: Living Under Societal Expectations

Most of us exist within a community, bound by societal expectations. Daily life involves constant assessment—whether in classrooms, places of worship, or workplaces. Our society is governed by unwritten rules that dictate behavior, and those who stray from these norms often face criticism. To maintain social order, conformity is often necessary.

However, embracing your true self is crucial. Do not mold yourself into someone else out of fear of exclusion.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Evolution of Fear

Historically, humans have evolved to be social creatures due to survival needs. The fear of being judged, or not fitting in, is deeply ingrained. In ancient times, isolation could have dire consequences—exposure to harsh elements, lack of food, or threats from wildlife necessitated social bonds.

Today, while the stakes have shifted, the urge to conform lingers. We are still burdened by fears—whether it's speaking publicly, launching a new venture, or pursuing our passions.

Chapter 2: The Price of Individuality

To be deemed "selfish" for adhering to individual beliefs can be a daunting label. Yet, it's essential to evaluate your convictions and not shy away from your aspirations due to external opinions. History is filled with figures who faced disdain yet made significant contributions to society.

When I published my first article on Stoicoftheday.com, fear loomed large. It became clear that while some would appreciate my work, others would not. Criticism is an inevitable part of sharing your voice.

Section 2.1: The Impact of Social Media

In today's digital landscape, our thoughts and expressions often require validation through likes and comments. The influence of social media can be intoxicating; we become driven by metrics rather than our intrinsic motivations.

I've found myself reverting to past successes instead of exploring new avenues when faced with underwhelming engagement. Over time, this has distanced me from my authentic self, as I prioritize what is deemed "acceptable" over what truly resonates with me.

We live in an era where opinions are readily available, often from individuals whose insights we wouldn’t typically seek in person. This dynamic can lead us to internalize external judgments, potentially stifling our creativity and authenticity.

Section 2.2: Reclaiming Your Narrative

It's time to stop letting others' opinions dictate your life. Begin living authentically, irrespective of societal pressures. While it's natural to consider how others perceive you, losing yourself to fit in is detrimental.

Surround yourself with individuals who resonate with your values and interests. If your current circle doesn't support your growth, seek out new communities where you can thrive.

Ultimately, understanding others' criticisms often reflects their limitations rather than yours. If I had met visionaries like Elon Musk years ago, I might have dismissed his ambitious plans as unrealistic. Yet, he proved otherwise, demonstrating that our perceptions can be skewed by our limitations.

Section 2.3: The Courage to Pursue Your Truth

Take the time to reflect on your desires and make choices that align with your authentic self. Don't let the fear of disapproval hold you back. If you feel the need to change your path—be it leaving school or pursuing a relationship—do so without concern for others' judgments.

True freedom arises when you dare to chase your passions and stand firm in your beliefs, even in the face of opposition. Embrace the courage to be disliked and commit to your genuine self, allowing others the same freedom.
