Elevate Your Productivity with Obsidian: A Comprehensive Review

Chapter 1: My Obsidian Journey
The narrative begins with my experience using Obsidian for over three months. Reflecting back, I first downloaded it in January 2022, but my initial foray left me feeling quite daunted.
At first glance, the platform appears to offer immense potential, yet the steep learning curve can be intimidating. The multitude of configuration options can be overwhelming, requiring dedicated time to tailor it to your needs. After some frustration, I set it aside.
However, after encountering several compelling YouTube videos, I decided to give it another chance and began utilizing it for my professional tasks.
Section 1.1: Rediscovering Obsidian
Nicole van der Hoeven’s engaging tutorials reignited my interest in the application.
I lead a team and need a reliable system for managing review notes, objectives, and daily planning. While some argue that Obsidian may not be the best fit for this purpose, I believe that if it serves your needs, then it’s worth pursuing.
I have previously praised Drafts for its capabilities, but it has become cluttered as a repository. Drafts excels in capturing quick, fleeting notes, but it lacks the structure for storing comprehensive documents.
Subsection 1.1.1: The All-in-One Solution
Obsidian offers a singular platform for all my writing needs—truly everything.
The organizational capabilities of Apple Notes fall short for me; it lacks the necessary flexibility. In contrast, Obsidian combines the best features of both worlds. Additionally, since all files are plain text, they can be accessed and modified outside of Obsidian.
Section 1.2: Enhancing Functionality with Plugins
Obsidian’s functionality can be expanded with a variety of plugins. While numerous options exist, I’ve opted for a select few that cater to my requirements:
- QuickAdd: This powerful tool allows the creation of templated documents with pre-defined information, along with capturing content directly into files.
- Templater: Aids in inserting variables and functions into notes.
- Dataview: Displays the Obsidian Vault as a database, enabling filtering, sorting, and data presentation from your notes.
- Things3 Sync: Facilitates task creation in a note that syncs with Things3.
These plugins can easily be activated via the Command Palette or keyboard shortcuts.
Chapter 2: Practical Applications of Obsidian
I have developed several templates and, embracing automation, configured them to trigger through a button on my Stream Deck.
When generating a document for a one-on-one meeting, it automatically includes the team member's name and files it appropriately in their Obsidian folder. For each team member, I maintain a dedicated Notes document that I can quickly access and update without disrupting my workflow.
I also create various documents spontaneously, consistently seeking ways to streamline interactions through automation. Using Dataview, I compile a table of contents that provides an overview of all relevant documents for each team member.
My journey with Obsidian is progressing well, and I can confidently say that persistence is essential for anyone interested in mastering it. I continue to watch tutorials and read articles to expand my understanding.
