Clever Marketing Behind Apple's AirPods 3 and Pro Models

Chapter 1: Introduction to AirPods 3
The AirPods 3, introduced by Apple in October 2021, represent the latest update in their wireless earbuds lineup. While they share a design reminiscent of the AirPods Pro, they lack silicone tips and retain the in-ear style of previous AirPods generations. These new earbuds also incorporate features found in the Pro version, including Spatial Audio with head tracking, the Find My function, and the same audio system utilized in the AirPods Pro. Various tests suggest that the sound quality is comparable, although AirPods 3 is noted to have a slightly enhanced bass. Additionally, the battery life of AirPods 3 is superior to that of the Pro, offering up to 6 hours of listening time compared to 4.5 hours for the Pro. Priced at $279 in Australia, AirPods 3 is $120 less than its Pro counterpart.
This launch seems to be part of Apple's astute marketing approach, but it raises the question: are they encouraging customers to hold out for the AirPods Pro 2?
This video delves into the marketing strategies behind Apple's AirPods, highlighting how they create demand and entice customers to consider different models.
Section 1.1: The Appeal of AirPods Pro
In conjunction with the AirPods 3, Apple discreetly updated the AirPods Pro case to support MagSafe charging. This enhancement was not highlighted during the keynote presentation, yet it is featured prominently on Apple's website. Customers looking for MagSafe compatibility can still opt for the AirPods Pro. By catering to different market segments, Apple ensures that Pro users are not neglected, thereby maximizing their appeal.
Section 1.2: Clearance Sales on Older Models
With the older AirPods Pro with Wireless Charging Case now discontinued on Apple's website, numerous retailers are offering clearance sales. These sales feature significant markdowns from the original prices. For instance, I purchased my AirPods Pro last November for AU$289, which was a remarkable discount, making it just $10 more than the AirPods 3. Many retailers are clearing out old stock before restocking with the new MagSafe cases, making such purchases a better value than opting for AirPods 3.
As of mid-January 2022, the price for AirPods Pro with a MagSafe case has dropped to as low as AU$305 on MyDeal, with options available for $189.99 at BestBuy in the US.
Chapter 2: Features that Matter
This video showcases essential tips, tricks, and hidden features of the AirPods 3, providing insights that every user should know.
Section 2.1: Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency Mode
A critical distinction between the AirPods 3 and the Pro models is the inclusion of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and Transparency Mode in the latter. These features have significantly enhanced my listening experience. The Transparency Mode allows users to feel as if they are not wearing earbuds, facilitating conversations without needing to remove them. Additionally, Apple introduced a conversation boost feature in the AirPods Pro, designed to assist those with hearing difficulties by clarifying speech.
Once accustomed to these features, reverting to earphones without ANC and Transparency Mode can be quite challenging.
Section 2.2: Anticipating the AirPods Pro 2
For those not inclined to purchase either the AirPods 3 or Pro, there are rumors surrounding the launch of the AirPods Pro 2 in 2022. Expected to support lossless audio and utilize Ultra Wide Band technology instead of traditional Bluetooth, this upcoming model is highly anticipated. With the release of the AirPods 3, existing AirPods Pro users may find it worthwhile to hold off for the Pro 2.
In summary, while the AirPods 3 is a commendable product, Apple's focus appears to be on maximizing technology across its product lines. The AirPods 3 aims to attract a broader audience, while the Pro models cater to those seeking the ultimate audio experience. This trend is consistent across Apple's offerings, from iPhones to Macs and beyond.
