A Chatbot That Asks Questions: A New Perspective on AI

Chapter 1: Rethinking Chatbots
Have you ever thought about how our conversations with technology could ignite stimulating discussions?
Since the beginning of this year, the rise of Generative AI chatbots has significantly altered our traditional methods of obtaining information. Platforms like ChatGPT, Bard, and Jasper have introduced us to relying on artificial assistants for a variety of inquiries.
However, these tools are not limited to just fetching information; they also have the ability to create new content, whether it’s drafting emails or formulating Excel equations. My first experience with this technology was awe-inspiring, yet I felt it didn't entirely live up to the excitement it generated. I kept this observation to myself, puzzled by the fervor surrounding these AI chatbots.
While I acknowledge the remarkable progress in this technology and the substantial influence Generative AI has had on our professional and personal lives, I found myself struggling to connect with it on a deeper level.
Through contemplation, I began to understand that my disconnect stemmed from a conceptual misunderstanding regarding the term "intelligence." With my background in the humanities, I’ve always viewed intelligence as the ability to cultivate curiosity, explore new concepts, and ask profound questions—much like Socrates and other dialectical philosophers practiced.
The ancient Greek philosopher Socrates was renowned for his method of dialogue, often steering conversations through thoughtful questioning rather than asserting his views or delivering speeches. He believed that “The unexamined life is not worth living for a human being.”
Imagine a chatbot that engages you by asking thought-provoking questions. To me, this idea is truly remarkable. Such a chatbot could act as a mentor or coach, offering unique insights that challenge our usual thought patterns.
Section 1.1: Chatbot as a Mentor
Consider the advantages of a chatbot that poses inquiries about specific subjects—this could greatly aid students in their educational endeavors. It could act as a supportive tool, prompting questions related to their studies and evaluating their readiness for exams. While this application may appear primarily educational, it remains deeply engaging.
Section 1.2: Chatbot as a Coach
Envision a situation where you're eager to progress in your career but are uncertain about your next steps. You want change but are unsure of the direction to take. In this context, a coach could serve as your guide through the transformative journey. A fundamental principle of coaching is to ask questions without offering direct advice. Effective coaches listen attentively and guide individuals to their own conclusions. While a chatbot might not fully replicate the effectiveness of a human coach, basic interactions could mark the beginning of a coaching experience.
Chapter 2: Chatbot as a Philosopher
While this concept may seem futuristic and somewhat fantastical, philosophy revolves around addressing timeless questions that have intrigued humanity for ages. Consider these inquiries: What is the purpose of life? What happens after we die? Is there meaning to our existence? Is there a distinction between right and wrong?
Currently, chatbots may not have the capability to provide answers to such profound questions; we still turn to philosophers for guidance. However, what if a chatbot could pose these existential queries to us? Such an interaction might serve as a continuous source of curiosity, inspiring us to seek answers.
In conclusion, while I cannot foresee the emergence of a chatbot that poses questions, I can imagine that it might present fascinating challenges. What are your thoughts on this topic? I would genuinely appreciate your feedback.
