Recently, I received a notification on TikTok indicating that a “new person” was following me and had sent me a direct message. While it’s often enjoyable to connect with new individuals online, encountering catfishers can be quite irritating. Given that my TikTok account is dedicated solely to my cats, finding myself targeted by a catfisher is both amusing and ironic.

After receiving the message, a flurry of questions raced through my mind. Is this actually a real person? Do bots intentionally make grammatical mistakes to pose as genuine users? Has this individual’s image been appropriated for a catfishing scheme? Notably, “Ivy” boasts 185 followers—could it be that this scammer has successfully deceived 185 individuals? Perhaps “followers” should be redefined as “victims” in this context!

Chapter 2: The Unsettling Reality

Fortunately, my profile picture is merely an image of one of my cats. However, I would be infuriated if my personal image were misappropriated for catfishing. Ultimately, I chose not to respond to “Ivy,” informing her in my own way that I’m no “gentleman” and to reconsider her fishing endeavors.
