Insights on Branding and Marketing from 2023: What I Discovered

Chapter 1 Key Takeaways from 2023
Wow! What a whirlwind 2023 has been! In the midst of countless coffee breaks and meetings that could have easily been emails, I stumbled upon a wealth of valuable insights regarding branding and marketing. These are the types of lessons that make you question how you ever navigated the industry without them.
So, in the spirit of sharing (I’m not one to keep knowledge to myself), here are my top five takeaways from the realms of logos, taglines, and beyond. Ready to dive in?
The Trade-off Between Speed and Durability
Speed is frequently marketed as a key selling point, especially for tech products. Yet, consumers often subconsciously weigh the benefits of quickness against the durability and quality of a product.
Consider payday lenders, emergency repair services, and fast food: all are quick options designed for urgent needs and not for sustained use. While a swift experience can feel appealing, building a brand entirely around it may suggest that its use is meant to be occasional rather than continuous.
Reach Over Perfection in Upper-Funnel Marketing
As a brand marketer, there’s a natural inclination to ensure that every piece of marketing material is impeccably produced. However, at the very top of the marketing funnel—especially on social media—it's often more advantageous to prioritize quantity of content over its polished appearance, as this can maximize brand reach.
Content that isn’t overly polished may appear more genuine and less like a blatant advertisement, thereby increasing audience receptivity. High-quality production is best reserved for crucial moments, such as final sales pitches, where it’s essential to convey professionalism to undecided consumers.
Prompted Awareness Surpasses Unprompted Awareness
Monitoring brand awareness is vital for marketers and businesses. Without initial recognition, potential customers are less likely to make purchases. There are two main metrics for assessing brand awareness:
- Unprompted Awareness: The ability of individuals to recall a brand from a category without any cues.
- Prompted Awareness: The ability to recall a brand when given specific prompts.
While unprompted awareness is often seen as the ideal metric, it tends to skew results by favoring existing customers and larger brands. Prompted awareness offers a clearer picture and is a more effective measure for gauging overall brand recognition.
Broadening Your Brand’s Associations for Greater Impact
In the branding industry, there’s a common belief that to truly make an impact, a brand should focus on a specific market entry point. This strategy advocates for a unique proposition to stand out from competitors.
However, examining the most successful brands reveals a different approach. They have built extensive associations across various entry points, enhancing their brand's overall presence. Rather than narrowing focus, brands should consider expanding their associations to reinforce their market position.
Investing in Unique Brand Assets Over Pop Culture
While pop culture references, such as celebrity endorsements, can significantly boost a brand's visibility, they come with pre-existing associations that might obscure the brand's unique identity.
Focusing on developing distinctive brand assets can lead to a clearer brand identity and stronger consumer connections.
So there you have it! These are my primary branding and marketing insights from the past year. Each lesson is drawn from my Monthly Muse, a record of my learnings throughout 2023. I encourage you to share your own insights in the comments—after all, sharing knowledge helps us all improve our craft.
Until next time, let’s continue to build our brands in 2024!
