Choosing the Best Cell Service for Uncertain Times

Chapter 1: The Challenge of Misinformation
In today's world, where conspiracies like Qanon and rampant misinformation prevail, distinguishing fact from fiction has become increasingly challenging. Information that appears credible can often be misleading, which can lead to confusion and anxiety. Amidst this chaos, I stumbled upon an intriguing insight that I felt compelled to share, particularly with those who engage in doomsday prepping.
For the past 17 years, I have relied on the same cellular provider. Initially, there were only three major players in the market: AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. While other options existed, their coverage was widely regarded as inferior compared to these giants.
Recently, I've contemplated switching my cellular service. Given that many smaller networks operate on the infrastructure of these major providers, it begs the question: why should I continue paying premium rates when I could switch to a lesser-known brand at a significantly lower price?
At present, my unlimited plan costs me $250 monthly for two lines, which includes $38 for phone financing. However, I could transfer both lines to Mint Mobile, which utilizes the T-Mobile network, and pay only $60 a month for an unlimited data plan.
This change would result in substantial savings. After accounting for the financing, my current provider takes $2,544 from me annually. If I settled my phone balance and moved to Mint, I would save $1,824 each year—money that could alleviate the financial strain caused by inflation and rising gas prices.

Section 1.1: Conversations Over a Beer
Recently, I shared a drink with a friend where we discussed pressing global issues like inflation and the merits of cutting cable. My friend has been pivotal in developing the 4G infrastructure for the major providers mentioned earlier, and he is currently engaged in expanding T-Mobile's 5G infrastructure.
When I inquired about his choice of provider, I was surprised to learn that he uses Verizon instead of T-Mobile, despite his employment with the latter. He explained that a significant number of Verizon cell sites are equipped with natural gas generators. While acknowledging Verizon's high costs, he emphasized that this feature is why he remains a loyal customer, even covering his adult children's phone plans for the same reason. Although AT&T has similar setups, they are not as extensive as Verizon's. Interestingly, many top executives at T-Mobile are also Verizon customers. This speaks volumes, doesn't it?

Section 1.2: Preparing for Uncertainty
Given the current state of the world—marked by a pandemic, aging infrastructure, extreme weather events, inflation, and geopolitical tensions—our comfortable lives seem increasingly precarious. While I’m not rushing to stockpile supplies, I believe it's prudent to take preventative measures where possible.
As my current provider, Verizon has its drawbacks in terms of cost, but the knowledge that my service would remain functional in the event of a major disaster offers me some peace of mind. In a crisis that might disrupt power on a large scale, I can count on my cell service to remain operational. Not only will I be able to post my Wordle scores on social media, but I will also have the means to make emergency calls. As long as natural gas supplies are intact, my cell phone will be a lifeline. My strategy for preparedness? Stick with Verizon and invest in portable chargers.
