Being Sensitive: An Underappreciated Strength in Today's World

Chapter 1: The Gift of Sensitivity
In a light-hearted yet poignant exchange, I find myself at a store with a desire to return an unwanted item.
Me: "Hello, I would like to return this, please."
Store clerk: "Oh, I see. However, it's a gift, ma'am."
As the conversation unfolds, I explain my perspective.
Me: "Yes, I've heard that before. But honestly, it's not a gift for me. Its presence in my life brings chaos."
Store clerk: "Really? Can you elaborate?"
I delve into the emotional burden of being highly sensitive.
Me: "While others can engage with the news and witness injustice without lingering images haunting them for years, I'm stuck feeling every single emotion tied to this so-called 'gift.' It's overwhelming."
Store clerk: "Perhaps it just needs a different context? When you embrace it, you get to experience life vibrantly! Many people crave that sensation."
As I ponder the clerk's words, I seek alternatives.
Me: "Is there a possibility of exchanging it for something that only brings joy, avoiding the painful lows?"
Store clerk: "Unfortunately, those options are no longer available. It's all or nothing, I'm afraid."
Curious about the prospect of numbness, I inquire further.
Me: "Numbness, you say? Is that available?"
Store clerk: "Regrettably, there's a waiting list, and it's now offered via subscription."
The conversation takes an unexpected turn.
Store clerk: "Perhaps it's not the gift that needs returning; rather, it's the behaviors, policies, and systems that require change?"
Me: "About that waiting list..."
As I reflect on this notion, I conclude with a positive message.
Thanks for reading! Continue embracing your sensitivity; the world desperately needs it.
