UN271 is estimated to be between 62 and 230 miles wide, potentially making it one of the largest comets ever observed. Despite its size, pinpointing its orbit and location required extensive observation and analysis over several years.

In 2014, algorithms employed in the Dark Energy Survey (DES) detected UN271. Overall, the DES gathered 80,000 exposures, requiring 15 to 20 million CPU hours for data processing.
