A Comprehensive Look at the Apple and Samsung Smartwatch Debate

Chapter 1: Introduction to the Smartwatch Showdown
For the past month, I've been sporting the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro, and it's safe to say that I'm thoroughly impressed. My enthusiasm can be traced back to two key factors: its striking design and impressive battery longevity.
The design is particularly noteworthy. The round face is reminiscent of traditional watches, which is a refreshing change from typical smartwatch aesthetics. Initially, I found its bulkiness a bit overwhelming, but I've grown accustomed to it.
As for battery life, this smartwatch stands out as the first one I’ve used that can last nearly three days on a single charge. While I've consistently charged my Apple Watches nightly, the Watch5 Pro suggests that we should be past that necessity.
Next week, I’ll be receiving the Apple Watch Ultra, which I admit I don’t truly need. This prompted me to ponder how these two leading devices compare. More critically, which one will remain on my wrist more often?
Why Did Apple Make Me Buy This?
Let me clarify my reasoning.
Pricing and Market Positioning
This aspect could undermine the foundation of this discussion, so hear me out. The Watch5 Pro retails for £429, while the Apple Watch Ultra comes with a hefty price tag of £849.
These two smartwatches are positioned quite differently in the market. Apple markets the Ultra as a device that "pushes boundaries," targeted at serious athletes, while Samsung takes a more accessible approach, promoting the Watch5 Pro as a tool to help users "power" through their workouts. However, they do emphasize that it is "stronger than your toughest workout."
Both devices cater to fitness enthusiasts, but the Apple Watch Ultra is tailored for those engaged in extreme sports, whereas the Watch5 Pro feels more suited for everyday users.
Why, Samsung? WHY?
I find it perplexing.
Display Features
Having initially thought the Watch5 Pro was a bit large, I anticipate a significant adjustment when I first wear the Apple Watch Ultra. The Watch5 Pro features a display of 34.6mm, while the Apple Watch Ultra boasts an impressive 49mm screen—Apple’s largest wearable display to date. The brightness of the Ultra is remarkable, reaching up to 2,000 nits, which is double that of the Watch5 Pro.
In terms of specifications, materials, and overall capabilities, the Apple Watch Ultra clearly outshines the Watch5 Pro in display quality. However, I’ve never found the brightness of the Watch5 Pro lacking.

Key Features Comparison
Here’s where the comparison becomes quite imbalanced. The Apple Watch Ultra has a lengthy list of standout features, including a customizable Action button, a unique ‘Wayfinder’ watch face, a powerful siren, dual speakers, and a depth gauge for underwater activities. It can last up to 60 hours on a single charge and is equipped with specialized straps for various adventures.
The Watch5 Pro, on the other hand, offers a more relatable array of features. It includes standard smartwatch functions like notifications and heart rate monitoring, along with unique capabilities such as importing GPX routes for navigation and a trackback feature for finding your way back.
However, the 590mAh battery in the Watch5 Pro has truly impressed me. It surpasses the Apple Watch's all-day battery claim. While I still have yet to experience the Apple Watch Ultra, I remain skeptical about its battery life despite Apple's optimistic claims.
The Apple Watch Ultra resembles a friend who shows up to a hike decked out in brand-new gear, while the Watch5 Pro feels more like the reliable companion who's been around for years, yet still performs admirably.
Operating System: watchOS vs. Wear OS
This is where Samsung falters a bit. The Watch5 Pro runs on Google’s Wear OS, which, despite some modifications from Samsung, doesn’t measure up to watchOS. Wear OS feels somewhat outdated and sluggish compared to the more refined experience of watchOS.
Despite its shortcomings, Wear OS allows me to perform basic tasks like checking notifications and tracking workouts, which is sufficient for my casual usage. However, when you experience the polish of watchOS, it’s hard not to appreciate its superiority.
Kudos
The visibility of Samsung watches in public is noticeably low compared to the ubiquity of Apple Watches. The latter has become a staple for many.
The Challenge for Competitors
Every smartwatch maker faces the daunting task of capturing the prestige associated with the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch Ultra exemplifies this challenge. Many people have pre-ordered it, even those who may not genuinely require its extensive features.
Apple knows that most users will likely wear the Ultra for casual activities rather than extreme sports. The aspirational marketing surrounding the Ultra is evident, making it a coveted item.
Which Will Prevail?
I intend to keep the Watch5 Pro; it’s not going anywhere. I plan to alternate between Samsung's flagship and Apple’s adventure-ready device. The ultimate question remains: which will be my go-to choice? Will the user-friendly watchOS and the versatility of the Apple Watch Ultra win me over, or will the Watch5 Pro’s simplicity, classic design, and reliable battery life prove easier to manage?
Stay tuned!
